Why are FedEx, UPS, and USPS showing "couldn't connect" errors?

FedEx, UPS, and the U.S. Postal Service recently updated their browser requirements. As a result of that, Dashboard itself can no longer connect to their sites in older versions of Mac OS X. This is a limitation of Dashboard, so unfortunately the only workaround is to update to Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
