Some Handy Bookmarklets for Web Designers

Bookmarklets (sometimes called Favelets) are just snippets of JavaScript that are stored in a bookmark. Click the bookmark and it runs a script, which can do a number of useful things. Below are a few that I use on a regular basis. In most browsers you can install these by simply dragging the link below to your bookmarks bar.

Validate HTML Validates the HTML or XHTML for the page you’re viewing.
Validate CSS Validates the CSS for the page you’re viewing.
Validate Feed Validates the RSS or Atom feed you’re currently viewing.
Check Links Checks all of the links on the page you’re currently viewing, to make sure they’re in working order.
Create TinyURL Great for pages with long URLs. It creates a very short link that’s easy to email or post on message boards. Not exactly for web design, but nice to have handy anyway!
800 x 600 Sets the browser size to 800 x 600 pixels, for an approximation of how your site will look at lower resolutions.
Full Screen I don’t use this myself, but it’s handy for Safari users who like having a full screen option.
Normal Sets the browser window to my preferred size, which is a little bit shy of the full height of the screen and around 850 pixels wide.

The last three can be easily customized to different sizes if you like.

I keep all of my bookmarklets in a folder, so they’re easy to get at without taking up too much room. It’s not a bookmarklet, but a nice HTML Entity Reference is another thing I like to keep handy.
