Personal Background
I was born in the Detroit area of Michigan, just after Star Wars was released in theatres. I’ve spent most of my life in Michigan aside from a few years outside Charlotte, North Carolina and a lot of vacations in Illinois. I knew I wanted to be an artist when I was approximately four and a half. I also wanted to be a robot, but I’m still working on that one. My favorite food was cookies, and it still is.
When I was ten, my dad brought home an Apple Macintosh 512K, and I knew I wanted to create art with computers. The first thing I drew in MacPaint was a kangaroo. Soon after, Zork and Space Quest ate my brain. I spent a lot of time making computer games but never finishing them, a hobby I still enjoy today.
When I was eighteen, my friend Greg taught me the magicks of the internets (well, back then they only had one). I knew immediately that I wanted to create art with computers and publish it online.
I am left-handed, but I use a mouse solely with my right, and a I play a right-handed guitar. It took me a long time to figure out that I bat and golf left-handed, which is probably why I hate sports so much.
In my free time I help to grow a caring community of musicians, artists, and writers. We call it Tense Forms. I also spend a lot of time with my girl Holly Tickner, who I also work with from time to time. I also work occasionally with my good friend Frank Snowgold, a talented illustrator and designer.
Range Murata, Tim Schafer, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Vaughan Oliver, Charles Thompson, authors named Douglas, my family, and every one of my dearest friends are some of the people that have inspired me.
