Tense Log 2.0 beta 2 Preview

I’ve been hacking away at Tense Log whenever I can spare a moment, giving it a major visual overhaul and a bunch of smaller tweaks in the process. Aside from being much easier on the eyes in general, it has bigger text, bigger buttons, and a centered layout that fits larger window sizes much better. I’ve also incorporated a modified version of Lightbox JS to display full size images. The CSS is much cleaner as well, already a good 7K smaller, which is quite a bit when you’re just talking text files.

The Uploads section has been greatly improved. Subfolders are now indented slightly, so it’s easier to see how they’re organized. There’s a new Folders section at the bottom too, replacing the new and edit buttons on the left whose purpose was entirely unclear.

I’ve also added a thorough comment spam prevention system. It’s proven pretty effective so far—I’ve blocked over two thousand spam comments in just a couple of months, and I’ve only had one false positive. I haven’t gotten to it just yet, but I’ll be adding a moderation system to deal with questionable comments. You’ll be able to adjust it to decide which comments are posted immediately, left for moderation, or automatically deleted.

I’ve been tweaking Tense Index a bit as well. The coolest new feature is that thumbnails are now updated automatically when the full size image is updated. In the past if you replaced an image you had to delete the old thumbnails manually, which was kind of a pain in the ass really. Lightbox JS has been added to Tense Index as well, and you can now add a description that displays below the enlarged image.

Of course I’ve fixed numerous bugs too, particularly for servers with register_globals disabled.

I’m hoping to make Tense Log 2.0 beta 2 available around the beginning of September. At that point the only thing left will be finding bugs and squashing them, so a final release should be just around the corner!

August 6th: Well that was easy… The spam moderation system is now in place, and it works beautifully!
